Ed Spielman (Creator of the ABC-TV 'Kung Fu’ Television Series

Sensei Chuck Merriman has been my teacher and friend for most of a lifetime. I recall telling him of my idea for the ‘KUNG FU’ series …before it was a series.

Chuck Merriman is a vital and important part of the development of authentic Martial Arts in the United States. Having dedicated his life to the Martial Arts in the truest spirit, he is the living product of those pioneers with whom he was associated. His experiences with these unique Sensei live on through Chuck. He has forgotten more about real Martial Arts than most teachers know.

In Japan, in addition to his genuine 9th Degree Rank in Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate Do and numerous honoraria, he might even carry the designation “Living National Treasure’. Overstatement? I think not. In Japan, this designation is for men and women who cannot be replaced. Chuck Merriman is clearly among those few great Sensei with such a strong and unbroken connection to the past, to real martial arts devoid of show-biz narcissism.

It has been correctly suggested that ‘great’ men are not necessarily ‘good’ men. Chuck Merriman is both. In a lifetime of dedication, he has proven his depth of knowledge and skills internationally and has brought great advancement and credit to Martial Arts in the United States. He has left a clear path for others to follow, those fortunate enough to know him.

It has been my privilege to call Chuck Merriman my teacher and friend for more than forty years.

I have had the pleasure of attending several of Sensei Merriman's seminars over the past two years and have immensely enjoyed all of them. His ability to combine challenging training integrated with informative historical and theory lecture components make for a high level of intensity and enthusiasm throughout the events. Sensei Merriman's extensive training, teaching and coaching background makes for some wonderful conversation to supplement the training experience.

I would highly recommend him as a seminar presenter to any instructor looking to enhance and expand the training experience of their students. I am also pleased to have Sensei Merriman as a "Jundokan Brother!"

Hanshi Merriman has been one of the leading masters on Okinawa Goju-Ryu Karate for many years. He has come to Los Angeles to conduct several seminars at my dojo. He is truly one the greatest masters as a competitor, coach, teacher, and a champion. He is a dynamic teacher and when he gives a seminar magic happens. If you ever have the chance to train with him do not miss it. I have trained under several of what I consider good Karate masters but Hanshi Merriman is the best and I consider him a great friend for over 25 years.

Chuck Sensei is a living legend of classical Karate Do in general and specifically in the art of Okinawa Gojuryu. Great life experience and charismatic teaching abilities are combined in Sensei Merriman. He is at all times ready to chat, talk, explain and teach his art. Highly accredited by the professional Martial Arts community worldwide. I had the honour and the pleasure to know Sensei for many years and of course trained and thought by this wonderful Teacher, always with care and feeling and with great love to the art. Merriman Sensei, is one of the highest ranked living authorities in the field of Gojuryu Kata by all means. He experienced and learned first hand from the original first generation Teachers of Goju-ryu and has become a living treasure of our Martial Arts community. Sensei, is an excellent source of information to all Karateka. His life experience as a student and especially as a high ranked Sensei (9th Dan, Hanshi - Okinawa Gojuryu Karatedo - Sho Honbu Jundokan) made him a highly qualified unique teacher of Goju Kihon, Kata, Bunkai and classical Okinawan training methods. He is a real historian and philosopher of Goju-ryu Karatedo. It is my great pleasure and pride to be close to Sensei as my highly respected Sensei, Senior and Mentor.
